Brats should be cooked for 15-20 mins. over medium to low heat at (350˚F-300˚F) and the internal temperature of brats should be 160˚F. Thick brats may take a longer time than usual so the recommended time may vary. The middle part of that brat may still seem to be pink, but it’s considered safe to eat when they reach the safe internal temperature of 160˚F.

Tips to Cook Brats on Grill:

  • Don’t buy precooked brats otherwise, you will end up with less taste. Lots of precooked brats are available with added flavorings such as smoke to create the effect of coming right off the grill. You can achieve far better flavor by parboiling and grilling them home.
  • Don’t make poking holes in the casing of brats otherwise, it will release all of the flavor and juices. This may cause to overcook the meat because all of the juices have been released.
  • Don’t cook the bratwurst oven too high heat because outside of brats will cook faster than inside. If you boil them oven too high heat, the casing will burst and release all the juices. So, cook over medium heat to cook the brats perfectly.

Cook Beer Brats on the grill is a tricky part of the process. First, you have to maintain the grill temperature between 300°F (149°C) to 350°F (176°C) before grilling the brats.

While your grill is heating, pour 12-24 ounces of German beer in a skillet or pan with a cover. Add 6 brats and bring them to simmer or low boil over low to medium-low heat. Let the brats cook in the beer for about 15 mins. or until the sausages reach a temperature of 160°F (71°C) as per USDA recommendation.

After cooking the brats in beer, place them directly on a hot grill and cook for 2-3 mins. or until golden brown. Move and rotate them often because they will quickly burn due to beer bath. SO, don’t let them cook over direct heat for a long period.

How Long to Grill Brats at 400°?

If you are cooking brats at 400°F, you should cook them for 15 mins max. Otherwise, the resulting brats will be burnt.
