Description

Here, we come up with an Easy Homemade Chocolate Sponge Cake Recipe. This cake can be used as a base for black forest cake or any dessert that calls for Chocolate Sponge Cake. 

Easy Homemade Chocolate Sponge Cake Recipe Ingredients:
  • 60 g All-purpose Flour
  • 20 g Cocoa Powder
  • 1/8 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Baking Powder
  • 5 tbsp Fine Sugar
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 Egg Yolk
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 4 tbsp Oil
  • 1/2 cup Semi-sweet Chocolate Chips
  • 2 tbsp Semi-sweet Chocolate Chips
  • 1 Chocolate Bar
Easy Homemade Chocolate Sponge Cake Recipe Instructions:
  1. Step 1.

    First, grease and line the baking pan and dust some cocoa. You can remove the excess cocoa by inverting the pan. 

    Preheat the oven at 170°C for at least 15 mins. 

    Now, sieve cocoa, baking powder,  flour & salt together, mix all of them and set them aside. 

  2. Step 2.

    Take a large mixing bowl break 2 whole eggs. Separate 1 egg yolk and add it with sugar. 

    Start beating at a slow speed so that it won't splash out. Increase the speed gradually and beat until frothy. 

  3. Step 3.

    Now, add vanilla extract & beat until a ribbon consistency is achieved. The eggs turn frothy & foam up. The volume you may see would be double. 

    You can check the ribbon consistency of this mixture when you lift it and fall from the whisk. Continue to beat until you get according to your expectation. 

  4. Step 4.

    Now, pour vanilla and oil in a slow stream to the egg mixture. Beat the mixture until combined. 

    The flour needs to be added in 3 batches. Now, sprinkle 1/3 of flour & cocoa into the egg mixture. Don't overbeat or over mix the batter.

    Repeat adding the remaining 2/3 in a portion of 1/3. 

  5. Step 5.

    Transfer this batter to the prepared pans. Bake at 170°C for 15 mins if you are using 6" pans. Bake for 20-24 mins if you are using a single 6" pan. 

    When baking is done test the cake by inserting a cake tester or a normal knife to come out clean. Transfer the cake to the wire rack to cool. 

  6. Step 6.

    Dust some powdered sugar or make a frosting. This Chocolate Sponge Cake can be used to make black forest cake or you can melt the chocolate chips and pour it over the cake. Decorate it with some chocolate shavings.
